Make a printable label sheet from exact measurements

Place storage names on a custom plain-paper sheet, keep every dimension explicit and check the layout before a test print.

Illustrative resourceNot tool-testedPeople making a small custom sheet of ordinary craft-storage labels from supplied dimensions
What you’re working towards

An editable A4 SVG with eight correctly placed 85 × 50 mm craft labels, a text-to-position CSV, an inspected PNG preview and a print-check card. Vector geometry and local text bounds are checked; printer margins and physical dimensions still require an actual test print.

Editable self-contained A4 master with eight 85 × 50 mm craft labels and a separate 20 mm calibration square. Physical printing is untested.

Not tool-tested. Review and adapt before using it for a real project.

A4 craft-storage label sheet with two columns and four rows: Pencils, Tape; Paper, Clips; Pens, Envelopes; Labels, Spare cards. Each nominal label is 85 × 50 mm. A separate 20 mm calibration square sits below the grid. Exact coordinates are provided in the source and position table.
Custom plain-paper fixture. Vector dimensions and this rendered preview are checked; printer margins and physical printing still need an owner test.

Source files to work with

Make a start

One step at a time.

4 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Set up the worked example

Open

Open a new text-AI chat, a plain-text editor and an SVG viewer/editor that can preserve millimetre page sizes. Download craft-labels-source.md and craft-storage-labels.svg; keep both unchanged. The PNG download is a screen preview, not a measured print master. Without an SVG viewer you can check the dimensions and draft source, but rendered-text checks stay pending. A printer and ruler are only needed for your later physical test.

Add the sample

In step 1 replace [paste source measurements and labels] with the whole craft-labels-source.md, matching ‘The starting point’ (Synthetic input). In step 2 paste the complete checked specification, including all eight names/positions and calibration rules. Save the new SVG and table, then reopen them before step 3: replace [paste] under SOURCE / SVG / POSITION TABLE with the full original source and reopened files. Attach an actual preview of your saved SVG only if available and supported; otherwise say visual/bounds checks remain unperformed. In step 4 paste the original source plus print settings you can actually see, or say ‘settings not checked’. ‘The intended result’ (Illustrative output) and downloads are reference answers, not a successful print of your draft.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Write down the whole template

Download the source and SVG, then list page size, label size, rows, columns, gaps and grid margins. A sheet must balance in both directions before text is placed. Keep the calibration area in the same coordinate plan.

Your starting prompt
Build a measurement specification from my label source. Use one unit, a top-left origin, x right and y down. Preserve every source ID and label in order. Show the width and height equations for the full sheet, including all gaps and margins. Locate a calibration square only where it fits without overlap. Report missing or inconsistent measurements instead of guessing. Treat this as a custom plain-paper sheet unless a separately verified stock specification is supplied. Do not claim printer compatibility.

SOURCE:
[paste source measurements and labels]
Expect

A complete A4 portrait specification with two columns, four rows and eight 85 × 50 mm labels, plus the calibration area.

Check

Check 15 + 85 + 10 + 85 + 15 = 210 mm and 25 + 4 × 50 + 3 × 9 + 45 = 297 mm. The coordinate origin is top-left; x goes right, y down. Use the final 50 mm label height, not the older 55 mm sketch.

If it differs

If a dimension or name changes, point to the source and request correction. Keep unknown printer margins unknown; fitting on the page mathematically does not establish printer reach.

02

Generate the SVG and matching position table

Use explicit millimetre page dimensions and a matching viewBox. Each source name belongs to one row and column. Keep cut boundaries and text positions inspectable, with no external assets.

Your starting prompt
Using only this approved specification, return a complete editable SVG and a CSV text-to-position table. Set the SVG width and height in millimetres and its viewBox so one coordinate unit is one millimetre. Use explicit label rectangle coordinates and stable source IDs. Preserve label text exactly. Keep every word at least 5 mm inside its label. Add the supplied calibration square at its specified coordinates and explain whether to measure stroke centerlines or outer ink edges. Use no scripts, external fonts, links, images, clipping masks or hidden text. Do not redesign dimensions to fit text.

APPROVED SPECIFICATION:
[paste]
Expect

Complete editable SVG and a matching eight-row CSV. Save only the SVG source as my-craft-labels.svg and the table as my-craft-label-positions.csv in plain UTF-8 text, separately from the originals; reopen both before the next step.

Check

SVG width/height are 210mm/297mm and viewBox is 0 0 210 297. Columns start at x15 and x110; rows at y25, 84, 143, 202. Names stay Pencils, Tape; Paper, Clips; Pens, Envelopes; Labels, Spare cards. Calibration is 20 × 20 mm at (15,266).

If it differs

If only a fragment or picture is returned, request full SVG/table source. Remove code-fence lines and check the ending is .svg, not .svg.txt. Do not let a long name change the dimensions. No script, external resource, clipping mask or hidden text belongs in this file.

03

Check geometry and the actual rendered text

Compare all label positions with the source, then open the actual rendered image. Text source alone cannot show whether the chosen font clips. Measure real glyph bounds where your editor supports it.

Your starting prompt
Audit the SVG and position table against the source. Check every source label exactly once, row/column assignment, all rectangle dimensions, page equations, non-overlap, calibration size and the actual rendered text bounds. Distinguish source parsing, measured glyph bounds and direct image observations. If you cannot open the rendered file or measure bounds, say those checks remain unperformed. Test a wrong-size rectangle, overlapping label, swapped name and oversized text. Do not infer successful printing from a rendered image.

SOURCE / SVG / POSITION TABLE:
[paste]

RENDERED IMAGE:
[attach the actual preview]
Expect

A source/geometry audit and separate rendered-text observations for the reopened saved files. Open your saved SVG in the viewer and export a new PNG preview only if that tool supports it.

Check

Each name appears once, rectangles are 85 × 50 mm and all 28 label pairs avoid overlap. Every word needs at least 5 mm of space inside its label: measure actual letter bounds with editor controls if available. A clear-looking preview alone does not measure that inset.

If it differs

If you cannot view or measure letter bounds, mark those checks pending. The prompt’s wrong-size, overlap, swapped-name and oversized-text cases need separate disposable copies or in-memory tests; proposed tests are not completed tests. Never damage the master. Correct the real draft, save/reopen a new revision and repeat affected checks; no print success follows from a picture.

04

Make a measured plain-paper test

Use actual size / 100% and confirm A4 portrait. Check unknown printer margins before printing. Measure the square, a label, both gaps and the grid offsets; retain failed observations rather than silently fitting the sheet to the page.

Your starting prompt
Make a print-check list for this exact SVG. Require A4 portrait and actual size / 100%, with fit-to-page and automatic shrink/enlarge disabled. Keep printer non-printable margins unknown until checked. Ask the owner to measure the calibration square between stroke centerlines on both axes, label size, gaps and offsets, and inspect clipping. Leave actual observations blank until a real test exists. If a measurement differs, identify settings to inspect and require another measured test rather than declaring success or applying an unexplained scale correction.

SOURCE AND PRINT SETTINGS AVAILABLE:
[paste]
Expect

A print-check card with blank actual observations, plus settings to inspect before a later plain-paper test.

Check

Use the saved SVG, A4 portrait and actual size / 100%; disable fit-to-page and automatic resizing. Check printable area first. On a real test measure the square between stroke centerlines: 20 mm each way, versus 20.2 mm between outer ink edges. Also check 85 × 50 mm labels, 10/9 mm gaps and 15/25 mm left/top offsets.

If it differs

If you cannot confirm physical-size controls or printer margins, pause the print test. If measured sizes, offsets or clipping differ, record the failure, inspect paper/scale/margins and remeasure a fresh test. Do not silently scale to fit or claim compatibility with commercial adhesive stock.

Optional: improve the result

Recheck an edited template before reuse

A new paper size or longer label changes the problem. Keep geometry edits explicit and rerun both coordinate and rendered checks.

Advanced prompt
Review this proposed label-sheet revision against the approved original. Produce a change list for page size, label sizes, margins, gaps, row/column count, calibration coordinates, font and text. Recompute both sheet equations, all positions, pairwise intersections and actual glyph insets. Reject unapproved dimension changes or text substitutions. Keep the original measurement record and make a new print-check card with unmeasured physical fields. Separate local parser, geometry and visual observations from unperformed browser, AI-service and physical-print tests.

ORIGINAL SOURCE:
[paste]

REVISED SVG AND LABELS:
[paste]
Optional: use your own input

Make a measured sheet for your own storage names

Use your own non-sensitive craft-storage labels and a complete custom plain-paper specification. Open a fresh chat and fill the prompt below. After checking the equations and mapping, send:
“Generate complete self-contained SVG and a matching CSV position table from my approved specification. Use explicit millimetre page dimensions and a matching viewBox so one unit equals one millimetre. Preserve each source ID, exact text and row/column. Keep actual letters at least 5 mm inside each label, with explicit cut outlines and the approved calibration square/stroke convention. No scripts, links, external fonts/images, clipping masks or hidden text. Do not resize the page or substitute wording to fit.”
Save only the complete SVG as my-storage-labels.svg and the CSV as my-storage-label-positions.csv, separate from source files. Reopen those saved files before the audit. Open the SVG in a capable viewer and export a new PNG preview if supported; otherwise mark visual and letter-bound measurements pending.
“Audit my original specification and reopened saved SVG/CSV below: exact names once each, coordinates, rows/columns, sizes, sheet equations, every pairwise overlap, calibration and actual rendered letter bounds. Keep source checks, measured bounds and image observations separate. For deliberately wrong-size, overlapping, swapped-name and oversized-text variants, use only separate disposable copies or in-memory checks and report which tests actually ran. Do not infer successful printing. SOURCE AND SAVED SVG/CSV: [paste full text]. ACTUAL PREVIEW: [attach only if supported; otherwise state unavailable]. ACTUAL VIEWER/BOUND CHECKS: [state results or unperformed].”
Save and reopen any correction and repeat its checks before proceeding.
“Make a print-check card for my checked saved SVG. Require my specified paper size/orientation, actual size / 100%, no fit-to-page or automatic resizing, and verified printable area. List expected calibration centerline dimensions, label dimensions, gaps, page offsets and clipping checks from my specification. Leave actual observations blank until measured. MY AVAILABLE PRINT SETTINGS: [paste observed settings or say unknown].”
If physical testing is possible, use a ruler on one plain-paper test and record real results; otherwise stop with physical size unverified. A discrepancy requires settings review and another measured test, not an unexplained scale correction. Your measurements and names replace all sample values. The original advanced prompt needs your own original/revised source before reuse; re-render changed text/fonts and keep originals. No commercial-stock fit, real printing or publishing is assumed.

Your own-input prompt
Help me draft a measured custom plain-paper sheet for my storage labels. First validate MY SPECIFICATION in millimetres, using a top-left origin, x right and y down. Preserve every label ID/text and intended row/column. Show full width and height equations including all gaps/margins. Check the calibration square and caption have an explicit reserved area and do not overlap labels or leave the sheet. Ask about missing/inconsistent dimensions or ambiguous order and stop for review. Do not change measurements, invent printer margins or claim printing/stock compatibility. Later we will make, save and inspect a static SVG and matching table, then prepare an uncompleted print-check card.

MY SPECIFICATION
[Give paper width/height/orientation; label width/height; row/column count; horizontal/vertical gaps; left/right/top/bottom grid margins; cut-outline width; calibration square position/size/outline width and measurement convention; reserved caption area; exact label IDs/text/order. Mark any unknowns. Use only ordinary storage text you own.]

Check your own result

  • Both page equations balance and every label/calibration element fits without overlap at the supplied dimensions.
  • Each exact name maps once to the right place; actual rendered letters keep the required inset, or that measurement remains pending.
  • The reopened saved SVG is the measured master. PNG pixels and a pleasing preview do not establish physical print dimensions.
  • Physical observations remain blank until a real measured plain-paper test. Missing controls, clipping or wrong dimensions block use rather than trigger silent scaling.
Show, then try

The starting point

Synthetic input
# Source: custom plain-paper craft labels

Original synthetic fixture craft-labels-v1. This is ordinary craft-storage text for cutting from plain A4 paper. No commercial label-stock compatibility is claimed.

All coordinates and dimensions below are millimetres. Origin is the top-left of the sheet; x increases right and y increases down.

- Sheet: 210 × 297 mm, portrait.
- Grid: two columns, four rows. Each label is 85 × 50 mm.
- Horizontal gap: 10 mm. Vertical gap: 9 mm.
- Grid margins: left/right 15 mm; top 25 mm; bottom 45 mm. The bottom margin also contains the calibration square and its caption.
- Width check: 15 + 85 + 10 + 85 + 15 = 210.
- Height check: 25 + (4 × 50) + (3 × 9) + 45 = 297.
- Calibration square: x=15, y=266, width=20, height=20 mm. Its outline is 0.2 mm wide. Measure between stroke centerlines, horizontally and vertically; outside ink edges are 20.2 mm apart.
- Label cut outlines are 0.25 mm wide and centered on each nominal label boundary. Cut along the centerline.
- Text should remain at least 5 mm inside each label boundary. Use the supplied order, without adding or shortening text.

| ID | Text | Row | Column | Top-left (x, y) | Size |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| L01 | Pencils | 1 | 1 | (15, 25) | 85 × 50 |
| L02 | Tape | 1 | 2 | (110, 25) | 85 × 50 |
| L03 | Paper | 2 | 1 | (15, 84) | 85 × 50 |
| L04 | Clips | 2 | 2 | (110, 84) | 85 × 50 |
| L05 | Pens | 3 | 1 | (15, 143) | 85 × 50 |
| L06 | Envelopes | 3 | 2 | (110, 143) | 85 × 50 |
| L07 | Labels | 4 | 1 | (15, 202) | 85 × 50 |
| L08 | Spare cards | 4 | 2 | (110, 202) | 85 × 50 |

The shortest distance between calibration-square ink and the sheet's bottom edge is 10.9 mm. That geometric margin does not establish a printer's printable area. Printer margins, print-dialog behavior and physical print accuracy are unknown.

This final fixture uses 50 mm label height to reserve a useful calibration area. Do not mix it with an earlier 55 mm-high planning sketch. No browser, consumer AI service or physical printer was used to execute the guide.

The intended result

Illustrative output
MEASURED CRAFT-STORAGE SHEET

The editable SVG is A4 portrait, 210 × 297 mm, with a 0 0 210 297 viewBox so one vector coordinate unit equals one millimetre. This is the final custom plain-paper fixture, not a commercial-stock template.

GRID
Two columns × four rows. Labels are 85 × 50 mm. Horizontal gap 10 mm; vertical gap 9 mm. Grid margins are 15 mm left/right, 25 mm top and 45 mm bottom.
Width: 15 + 85 + 10 + 85 + 15 = 210 mm.
Height: 25 + 4 × 50 + 3 × 9 + 45 = 297 mm.

TEXT TO POSITION
L01 Pencils: row 1, column 1, top-left (15, 25).
L02 Tape: row 1, column 2, top-left (110, 25).
L03 Paper: row 2, column 1, top-left (15, 84).
L04 Clips: row 2, column 2, top-left (110, 84).
L05 Pens: row 3, column 1, top-left (15, 143).
L06 Envelopes: row 3, column 2, top-left (110, 143).
L07 Labels: row 4, column 1, top-left (15, 202).
L08 Spare cards: row 4, column 2, top-left (110, 202).
Coordinates use millimetres from the sheet's top-left, x right and y down. Every cut rectangle is 85 × 50 mm. The CSV includes text-center and baseline coordinates.

CALIBRATION
The separate square is at (15, 266), nominally 20 × 20 mm. Its 0.2 mm outline is centered on the boundary. Measure between stroke centerlines on both axes; outside ink edges are 20.2 mm apart. It does not overlap the label grid. Its bottom ink edge is 10.9 mm from the sheet edge, but actual printer margins remain unknown.

CHECKED LOCALLY
Eight labels appear once in source order at the expected positions. All 28 rectangle pairs are non-overlapping. Independent XML/CSV checks confirm dimensions, source text and the calibration square. Inkscape 1.4 actual text bounding boxes fit at least 5 mm inside each label. The actual 1260 × 1782 PNG was opened and inspected: eight labels, title, subtitle, cut outlines and full calibration area are legible without clipping. Fourteen invalid mutations are rejected, including wrong sizing, overlap, relabeling, hidden/clipped text and an oversized-glyph bounds failure.

BEFORE USING PAPER
Use the SVG as the measured master; the PNG is an on-screen preview. In your chosen editor, select A4 portrait and actual size / 100%; turn off fit-to-page. Confirm the printer can reach all content. Print one plain-paper test, measure the square in both directions, then check label dimensions, gaps, page offsets and clipping. Record observations on the print-check card. No physical print, browser printing or consumer AI workflow was executed, and no successful printer result is claimed.

REUSE
Edit a copy of the eight text nodes and matching CSV entries. Keep nominal geometry unchanged. Re-render and recheck actual text bounds after any font or wording change. A longer name does not authorize silently shrinking the page or changing the label dimensions.

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • Combining the final 50 mm-high labels with an earlier 55 mm-high sketch or copying its bottom margin.
  • Fitting the sheet to the page to hide clipping, which changes every physical dimension.
  • Measuring outside ink edges and expecting the calibration centerline dimension.
  • Assuming an untested printer can reach all content because vector geometry fits A4.
  • Changing font or wording without re-rendering and checking glyph bounds.
