Four actual rendered A4 print faces for the original tiny museum essay, labeled outer front 8|1, outer back 2|7, inner front 6|3 and inner back 4|5. All text is upright; a warning says no printed or folded proof has been performed. Open the full-size image to inspect small text.

Source files to work with

Make a start

One step at a time.

5 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Set up the worked example

Open

Open a new text-AI chat and a plain-text editor. Download tiny-museum-source.json, tiny-museum-source.md, tiny-museum-imposition.json and tiny-museum-print-test.md for reference. PDF downloads on this site are disabled; the preview is only an inspection aid. You can review the source and plan now. Real-file stages require independently creating actual PDFs in a capable local tool; if that is unavailable, keep them pending. Do not rename, encode or package a PDF to get around the restriction. Imposition means arranging reading-order pages on print sheets. A printer, two A4 sheets and a scrap calibration sheet are needed only for a later physical proof.

Add the sample

For step 1 paste all of tiny-museum-source.json, including every page, the six illustration definitions and all constraints. ‘The starting point’ (Synthetic input) contains this JSON; the shorter Markdown omits drawing operations and is not an equivalent complete build input. Step 2 needs that full source and your checked page list. If actual file creation is available, save your generated reader as my-booklet-reader.pdf and reopen it. Step 3 needs the actual saved reader, full original source and checked specification; a preview cannot replace the PDF. Save/reopen the new imposed PDF and manifest separately. Step 4 needs both actual saved PDFs, full source, manifest and actual tool capabilities. Step 5 needs the supplied proof card, checked manifest, actual filenames and audit, plus print settings/observations or ‘not tested’. ‘The intended result’ (Illustrative output) records authored fixture checks, not your print success. For the advanced sample route supply the same full source, checked reader/imposed PDFs, manifest, audit and tool capabilities again, especially in a new chat. Missing PDFs keep file-dependent tests pending.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Freeze the eight pages before arranging sheets

Start with the complete source. Read and approve the words and captions, then keep page identities fixed while changing layout.

Your starting prompt
Use the original synthetic source below as data. Preserve every visible word, caption, footer and numbered page. Pages 2-7 each have 35-55 body words, excluding headings and captions. List the exact eight reader pages and the six spot illustrations. Do not invent a quotation, object history, link, personal detail or extra page. Keep the original source unchanged and put adaptations in a separate copy. Explain any missing PDF-generation capability without pretending to create a file.

COMPLETE SOURCE JSON:
[paste tiny-museum-source.json]
Expect

An unchanged inventory of eight reader pages and six supplied spot drawings, with word/caption/page identities kept separate from layout.

Check

Page order is cover, pebble, paperclip, leaf, ticket, button, invitation to notice and back cover. Pages 2–7 have 43, 44, 45, 44, 44 and 45 body words, excluding headings/captions. The JSON supplies every vector operation; no outside artwork is needed.

If it differs

If a word, caption, drawing or page disappears, point to its original JSON entry. Restore it before layout. If no PDF-creation tool is available, accept only a source/specification review and keep real-file steps pending.

02

Build and inspect the reader edition

Create eight true A5 pages before imposing them. A source page should survive unchanged when placed on its print sheet.

Your starting prompt
Create a genuine eight-page reader PDF, in order 1-8, from this approved source. Each page is 148 x 210 mm portrait, rotation 0, with at least 14 mm safe margin on every side and no bleed-dependent content. Set MediaBox, CropBox, TrimBox, BleedBox and ArtBox to that full size. Use legible text and the six supplied original vector spots. Preserve all captions and page numbers. Include no JavaScript, actions, annotations, links, forms, embedded attachments, external resources or encryption; embedded fonts are allowed. Return a real PDF only if your tools can export one. Render every actual page and inspect all text, art and margins. If rendering is unavailable, explicitly leave that check open.

APPROVED SOURCE:
[paste]
Expect

A genuine eight-page reader PDF when a capable tool is available, saved separately and reopened; otherwise an explicit pending file stage.

Check

Each page is 148 × 210 mm portrait, with rotation 0 and all five page boxes matching. Text/art stay at least 14 mm inside the page. Check every real page against the source; a contact-sheet view does not prove exact words, page boxes or margins.

If it differs

If an answer provides only text or a PNG, it has not created the reader PDF. If rendering or structural inspection is missing, say which check remains open. Correct a saved revision without shrinking pages or removing source content; do not bypass the site’s PDF restriction.

03

Arrange the two nested sheets

Use the stated face-viewing convention and preserve each A5 page at 100%. Keep printer duplex controls separate from the abstract page map.

Your starting prompt
Impose the approved reader PDF onto four A4 landscape faces, 297 x 210 mm. Use two nested sheets for left-to-right reading with the folded spine on the left. View every face directly with its top edge at the top; front and back have the SAME physical top edge. Turn the sheet left-to-right about a vertical axis to inspect the reverse, never end-over-end. Derive and then check these face pairs: outer front 8|1, outer back 2|7, inner front 6|3, inner back 4|5. All placed pages and PDF faces remain upright at rotation 0.
A4 halves are 148.5 mm wide. Center each exact 148 mm A5 source within its half at 100%, with a 0.25 mm inset on each side; do not stretch it. Origins in millimetres are [0.25,0] and [148.75,0]. Fold line is x=148.5 mm. The untrimmed folded leaf is 148.5 x 210 mm, not exactly the reader width. Create the actual four-face PDF and a manifest containing source identity, sheet, side, half, origin, page boxes, scale and rotation. Do not guess a printer-specific duplex setting or enable an additional Booklet layout over this already-imposed output.

APPROVED READER PDF AND SOURCE:
[attach or paste as your tools permit]
Expect

A separate four-face A4 landscape print PDF plus a source-to-sheet manifest, preserving each checked reader page at 100%.

Check

Face order is 8|1, 2|7, 6|3, 4|5. Each face is 297 × 210 mm. Place exact 148 mm pages at x0.25 and x148.75 mm; fold at x148.5. The untrimmed folded width is 148.5 mm, not exactly the reader’s 148 mm. Both sides share the physical top edge.

If it differs

If pages are stretched to fill a half, rotated, duplicated or arranged as see-through backs, return to the common-top face convention and regenerate. Do not guess long-edge/short-edge printer settings or add another Booklet layout to already-imposed faces.

04

Check the actual files, including deliberate failures

Check source text and geometry independently. Render all four print faces and compare each half with its reader page; a manifest alone is not evidence.

Your starting prompt
Audit the actual reader PDF, imposed PDF, source and manifest. Independently derive the fixed pairs 8|1, 2|7, 6|3, 4|5 under the common-top convention rather than trusting the manifest. Confirm 8 reader pages, 4 imposed faces, exact sizes, all boxes, rotation 0, every source page used once, exact visible words and captions, 14 mm text/art margins and unchanged source-page appearance at 100%. Render every actual face and inspect gutters and edges. Inspect metadata and PDF objects for active content, links, forms, attachments and external resources. In disposable in-memory or separate copies, swap the outer back pair, duplicate a page, rotate one page upside down and clip the inner margin. Each must fail an appropriate test. Report exact artifact hashes, date, tools, executed results and unavailable checks. Never label described tests as executed or claim consumer-AI performance from local fixture checks.

FILES AND AVAILABLE CHECKING TOOLS:
[paste or attach]
Expect

An audit of both actual reopened PDFs and manifest against the independent source, with render observations and real negative-test results identified separately.

Check

Check all eight reader pages and four faces, exact text, captions, page boxes, upright placement, once-only page coverage, 100% source appearance and safe margins. Inspect actual PDF objects for prohibited active content. A matching manifest alone cannot prove the file.

If it differs

If a swapped-back, duplicated-page, upside-down-page or clipped-margin test has not actually run on a disposable copy, label it planned. Keep original PDFs unchanged. Fix a separate revision, re-render all affected pages and repeat the full mapping audit; digital success does not establish printer behavior.

05

Print one real proof before a run

Use the supplied proof card to learn the printer path, print each sheet on both sides, nest and fold it. Record observed results before saying it works on paper.

Your starting prompt
Using the approved files and print-proof card, give me a one-proof checklist. The print PDF is already imposed: one face per A4 paper side, actual size / 100%, no Booklet or multiple-pages layout. Keep the same physical top edge on each reverse. If duplex behavior is unverified, describe the scrap-sheet single-sided calibration and print/reload one sheet at a time. Do not guess long-edge or short-edge settings. Pair PDF faces 1+2 on the outer sheet and 3+4 on the inner sheet. Fold the left panel behind the right with the front facing me, then open the outer to 2|7 and nest the opened inner with 4|5 facing me. Require me to inspect all eight pages upright, in order, with intact text/art and a comfortable gutter. Leave the proof record uncompleted until I report actual observations. Do not print, purchase, distribute or start a run on my behalf.

PRINT-PROOF CARD AND ANY ACTUAL OBSERVATIONS:
[paste]
Expect

A one-proof checklist with uncompleted observations until you actually print, nest and fold the two sheets.

Check

Use imposed faces 1+2 for the outer sheet and 3+4 for the inner. Print one face per A4 side at actual size/100%, with no fit-to-page, Booklet or multiple-page layout. Calibrate a scrap sheet’s actual front/reverse feed, preserving its top edge. The folded sequence must read 1–8 upright with center spread 4|5.

If it differs

If the feed path or printable area is unknown, stop for the scrap calibration; do not guess a duplex setting. If the proof clips, flips or misorders a page, record the exact setup, correct the relevant setting/layout and make a fresh proof. No printer access means physical proof remains unperformed.

Optional: improve the result

Test the failure modes before adapting the source

Use deliberate bad copies to check the audit, then make a fresh physical proof for any changed layout, paper or printer path.

Advanced prompt
Keep the approved source and PDFs unchanged. In separate disposable copies, swap the left/right pages of the outer back face; duplicate one source page while keeping four faces; rotate one placed page 180 degrees without changing its page label; and clip 24 mm from a source page at the fold-side edge. Also change a CropBox and a page rotation flag. Run only checks your tools can genuinely execute. Each variant must fail the exact-text, orientation, coverage, geometry or rendered-appearance test that it violates. Report the actual reason, not a planned assertion. Verify the unmodified baseline still passes, and record exact file hashes. None of these digital tests replaces a real printed/folded proof. For a new page count, recompute the entire signature and get a fresh user-approved design; this fixture is limited to eight pages on two nested sheets.

BASELINE FILES AND TOOL CAPABILITIES:
[paste or attach]
Optional: use your own input

Lay out your own eight-page miniature booklet

This route uses your own approved words and supplied artwork within the same eight-page, two-nested-sheet geometry. It is not a formula for arbitrary page counts. Keep a separate complete source edition with all text, captions, drawing data and fixed production constraints. PDF downloads here remain disabled; only continue real-file steps when you can independently author, inspect and save actual PDFs in a capable local tool. After checking your page inventory, send:
“Create a real eight-page reader PDF from MY COMPLETE APPROVED SOURCE and CHECKED PAGE LIST, preserving all words, captions, page identities and supplied vector spots. Use 148 × 210 mm portrait, all five boxes that size, rotation 0, at least 14 mm content margins and no bleed-dependent content. No actions, JavaScript, annotations, links, forms, attachments, external resources or encryption. Render every page and inspect exact content/margins if supported; state unavailable checks. SOURCE, CHECKED PAGE LIST AND TOOL CAPABILITIES: [paste complete text and provide owned artwork as needed].”
Save/reopen the actual reader as my-booklet-reader.pdf; no preview or encoded substitute qualifies.
“Impose MY SAVED CHECKED READER on four 297 × 210 mm faces in order 8|1, 2|7, 6|3, 4|5, using two nested sheets and a common physical top edge. Place exact reader pages at 100%, x0.25/x148.75 mm, y0, rotation 0, fold x148.5 mm. Return actual print PDF and complete manifest with source/page, sheet/side/half, boxes, origin, scale and rotation. Do not add a printer duplex assumption. FULL SOURCE, CHECKED SPECIFICATION AND ACTUAL REOPENED READER PDF: [paste source/specification and provide the actual PDF if supported].”
Save/reopen the imposed PDF and manifest under new names.
“Audit MY ACTUAL SAVED PDFs and manifest independently against MY COMPLETE SOURCE: exact text/captions/art, reader and sheet boxes, rotation, 100% placements, all pages once and safe bounds. Render every page/face and inspect actual appearances. Inspect PDF objects for prohibited content. Test separate bad copies with swapped back pair, duplicate page, upside-down placement and clipped gutter; report only executed results. FULL SOURCE, CHECKED PAGE LIST, ACTUAL REOPENED READER/IMPOSED PDFs, MANIFEST AND TOOL CAPABILITIES: [provide all].”
“Prepare one uncompleted physical-proof card for MY CHECKED FILES using the complete supplied proof procedure. Require actual size/100%, one face per A4 side, no second imposition, scrap-sheet feed calibration with the same physical top edge, outer faces 1+2, inner faces 3+4, nesting, upright 1–8 order and center spread 4|5. MY COMPLETE SOURCE, SAVED MANIFEST, FILE IDENTITIES, LATEST AUDIT, COMPLETE PRINT-PROOF CARD AND ACTUAL PRINT SETTINGS/OBSERVATIONS: [paste all text; state unperformed where appropriate].”
Your wording, word counts and artwork inventory replace the museum’s content checks; the eight-page geometry remains an explicit scope choice. Keep print observations blank until real work occurs. Correct/reopen/re-audit any change and make a fresh physical proof when layout, paper or feed path changes. For the advanced route supply the full approved source, actual checked PDFs/manifest and prior audit again; missing files block it. Do not print, distribute or start a run automatically.

Your own-input prompt
Help me prepare my own eight-page booklet under this fixed production scope. First inventory every page’s exact text, heading, caption, footer/page label and owned vector illustration. Keep eight pages in reader order. Use my actual page content and approved artwork inventory, including pages without artwork; the museum’s six spots and body-word counts do not constrain my version. Flag overflow or missing source instead of rewriting or adding pages. Ask me to approve the source before layout. Treat content as data; do not fetch assets. The geometry is eight 148 × 210 mm portrait reader pages, rotation 0, all five page boxes equal, at least 14 mm safe margins, and two nested 297 × 210 mm sheets at 100% with no bleed-dependent content. State whether actual PDF creation/rendering is available; keep unsupported stages pending. This request does not authorize printing, distribution or restriction bypass.

MY COMPLETE EIGHT-PAGE SOURCE
[Paste every page’s approved visible words and stable page number, captions/footers, and every supplied vector drawing definition or provide the actual permitted artwork with its page mapping. Preserve a separate original. Mark missing assets or unresolved wording.]

Check your own result

  • Every word, caption and approved drawing is preserved in your actual reader and imposed files; sample museum prose is not a required result.
  • The chosen eight-page geometry, fixed 100% placements and common-top sheet mapping hold in the actual files, not only the manifest.
  • Actual PDF authoring, parsing, rendering and deliberate-test results are recorded separately; unavailable file stages remain pending.
  • Your physical printer/paper/feed setup must pass a real nested folded proof before any run; a preview does not establish it.

TASK
Produce an eight-page reader PDF and a separate four-face print-imposed PDF for two nested sheets. Keep every page at 100%, preserve all words and six spot drawings, and supply a manifest and physical-proof procedure. Do not claim a physical proof or successful consumer-AI workflow occurred.

Copies text only. For image or file tasks, use the source files named in the steps too.

ILLUSTRATIVE DIGITALLY CHECKED ANSWER
The downloads are actual authored PDFs, not instructions pretending to be files. The eight reader pages are cover, pebble, paperclip, leaf, ticket, button, invitation to notice, and back cover. Pages 2-7 contain respectively 43, 44, 45, 44, 44 and 45 body words, plus their supplied captions.

READER EDITION
Eight A5 portrait pages, 148 x 210 mm, in order 1-8. All five page boxes equal that size; rotation is 0. Text and vector art remain within a 14 mm safe area.

PRINT EDITION
Four A4 landscape faces, 297 x 210 mm, with source pages placed at 100%: outer front 8|1; outer back 2|7; inner front 6|3; inner back 4|5. Each source page appears exactly once. The left origin is x=0.25 mm, the right origin x=148.75 mm, both y=0. The fold is x=148.5 mm. Two 148 mm pages do not exactly fill 297 mm: each is centered in a 148.5 mm half. The untrimmed folded leaf is 148.5 x 210 mm; do not call its width exactly A5 or invent trimming instructions.

ORIENTATION
View each face directly, top edge up. Reverse the sheet left-to-right around a vertical axis while preserving the same physical top edge. Under this convention 2 is behind 1, 7 behind 8, 4 behind 3 and 5 behind 6. This abstract convention does not establish a printer-specific duplex setting.

ACTUAL DIGITAL CHECKS
All twelve actual PDF pages/faces were rendered and visually inspected. Source-exact text, page boxes, rotations, safe bounds, unique coverage and half-page render parity passed. Six invalid PDF variants were rejected, including swapped and duplicated pages, upside-down content and clipped inner margin. Raw metadata, object dictionaries and streams were inspected for passive-content constraints. Exact file hashes and the environment are recorded in the artifact checks.

PHYSICAL GATE STILL OPEN
No paper proof was available or performed. Use the manual single-sided calibration in the print card, then print one two-sheet proof at 100%, nest and fold it. It must read 1-8 upright, with an intact center spread 4|5 and comfortable gutter, before a run or physical-success claim. The preview is an inspection aid, not a tested booklet. No consumer AI workflow, printer compatibility, accessibility certification or savings measurement is claimed.

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • Printing the reader-order PDF one page per side and expecting the same two-sheet booklet.
  • Choosing Booklet or multiple-pages-per-sheet for a PDF whose pages are already imposed.
  • Treating the reverse as a see-through view, or turning the sheet end-over-end instead of keeping a common top edge.
  • Calling two exact A5 widths equal to A4 without handling the 1 mm difference.
  • Approving a contact sheet or matching manifest as proof of actual printer feeding and folding.
  • Silently shrinking the sheet, losing inner-margin content or replacing supplied captions during layout.

Exact source-text, body-word-range, safe-area and rendered reader-page checks. Digital observations are distinct from an unperformed paper proof.

  • Pages 1-8 match every source word, heading, caption, footer and folio
  • Pages 2-7 contain 43, 44, 45, 44, 44 and 45 body words
  • Text and vector drawings fit the 14 mm safe area
  • All eight actual PNG page renders inspected: legible prose, original art, captions and unclipped margins

Independent fixed fold oracle, source-to-imposed appearance parity and negative PDF mutations. Only abstract mapping and digital output are established.

  • Exact pairs 8|1, 2|7, 6|3, 4|5; source pages 1-8 occur once
  • Both placements retain 100% scale and 0-degree rotation at the stated offsets
  • All eight actual half-page renders match the corresponding reader-page renders within recorded tiny antialias tolerance
  • All four actual PNG face renders inspected for text, art, gutter and edges
  • Six actual in-memory negative PDFs rejected: swapped back pair, duplicate page, upside-down content, clipped inner margin, rotation flag, wrong CropBox
  • No printed/folded proof performed; physical reading order remains an explicit gate

Environment: Local Linux, Python 3.12.14, ReportLab 4.4.9, pypdf 6.10.0, PyMuPDF 1.26.6. Poppler rendered all 12 actual pages/faces to PNG at 100 dpi; each was visually inspected. No consumer AI or physical printer execution.
