What you’re working towards

Sum compatible ingredient quantities across supplied recipes, subtract usable stock and keep incompatible units separate. The worked result is a written example for practice; the AI steps have not been tested.

Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Open a chat and paste the example

Open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Copy every line under Input in this guide into the message box. Then add the prompt below (the instructions telling the assistant what to do) and send both together. Expect a written response shaped like the example under Output. The wording may differ. If the assistant asks for information already in the input, point to that line; if a necessary fact is missing, keep it unknown rather than guessing.

Your starting prompt
Combine the two exact recipe ingredient lists above, then subtract only the owner-confirmed usable stock. Show required, available and missing quantities for each ingredient. Preserve drained weight and original units, keep unchecked lemon juice stock unresolved, and do not round to invented pack sizes or order anything.
02

Check the specific result

There are five ingredients. Chickpeas total 480 g drained and oil totals 3 tablespoons before stock subtraction. Check the four known shortfalls and keep lemon juice as a stock-check question. Compare it with the Input yourself. If the response fails a check, paste the correction prompt below into the same chat. Recheck the corrected version before saving it.

Your starting prompt
Reconcile both recipe lists ingredient by ingredient. Recalculate the chickpea and oil sums, subtract only confirmed usable stock, and preserve the unknown lemon juice amount. Remove invented pack sizes, unit conversions or substitutions.
03

Try it with your own example

Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below, then replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with your own non-sensitive facts and rules. Include the kinds of details listed under Requirements. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of result as this guide, using your values. Compare every name, number and rule with your input. If something differs, point to the exact mismatch and ask for a corrected complete answer. Save only a version you have checked.

Your starting prompt
Combine all recipe ingredient lists below, then subtract only the stock I confirm is usable. Show required, available and missing quantities for each ingredient. Preserve variants, drained weights and units; flag incompatible units rather than guessing conversions. Keep unchecked stock unresolved. Do not invent pack sizes or order anything.

Use only the new input below. If a fact needed to finish is missing, ask me for it before choosing an answer.

MY INPUT
[PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE]
Optional: improve the result

Handle incompatible units honestly

Introduce a unit mismatch and require an explicit question instead of a guessed conversion. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.

Advanced prompt
Change the oil stock to “half a bottle; bottle capacity not supplied.” Keep both recipes unchanged. Rebuild only the oil line, show what can still be calculated, and ask the smallest question needed to determine the shortfall.
Show, then try

See the shape of the result.

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.

The starting point

Synthetic input
Made-up example for practice.

Made-up ingredient arithmetic only; recipes and cooking methods are outside this task. Recipe A requires pasta 300 g, drained chickpeas 240 g, tomatoes 200 g and olive oil 2 tablespoons. Recipe B requires drained chickpeas 240 g, olive oil 1 tablespoon and lemon juice 30 mL. Owner-confirmed usable stock: pasta 100 g; one chickpea can labelled 240 g drained contents; tomatoes 50 g; olive oil 1 tablespoon. Lemon juice stock has not been checked. Sum identical ingredients in identical units, subtract confirmed usable stock, and do not convert tablespoons to mL or assume shopping pack sizes. Do not order anything.

Copies text only. For image or file tasks, use the source files named in the steps too.

The intended result

Illustrative output
Written example for practice; not a recorded AI response.

Combined requirements and known shortfalls
Pasta: need 300 g; have 100 g; shortfall 200 g.
Drained chickpeas: need 240 + 240 = 480 g; have 240 g drained; shortfall 240 g drained.
Tomatoes: need 200 g; have 50 g; shortfall 150 g.
Olive oil: need 2 + 1 = 3 tablespoons; have 1 tablespoon; shortfall 2 tablespoons.
Check before completing the list
Lemon juice: need 30 mL; stock unknown; shortfall cannot yet be calculated.
Shopping quantity draft: pasta 200 g; chickpeas 240 g drained; tomatoes 150 g; olive oil 2 tablespoons. These are ingredient shortfalls, not a claim about purchasable pack sizes.
No substitutions, recipes, allergy guidance or purchase are included.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • A can’s total weight and drained weight are not interchangeable. Use the exact basis stated in the recipe and label.
  • Combining counts does not validate a recipe or establish dietary suitability.
