Make a start
One step at a time.
4 steps
Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.
Set up the worked example
Open
Open a chat AI that accepts pasted text and start a new conversation. Keep a calculator or paper handy for the ingredient sums. This is a written dinner plan; the AI cannot inspect food or certify its safety.
Add the sample
In step 1, replace [paste inputs] with the entire “The starting point” (Synthetic input), from “Synthetic planning fixture for two adults, three dinners.” through “Do not assume cooked leftovers.” Include the pantry amounts, all three recipe cards, schedule and shopping-pack facts. Send each later prompt in the same chat after checking the previous answer. “The intended result” (Illustrative output) is a comparison, not another input or proof that a recipe was cooked.
Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.
01
List quantities and trusted recipes
Exact quantities prevent a plausible list from hiding missing ingredients.
Your starting prompt
Read my pantry, trusted recipe cards and schedule. Make a requirements table for each recipe. Keep grams, drained weights, item counts and unknown quantities distinct. Do not invent dietary suitability, storage life, prices or ingredients.
PANTRY, RECIPES AND SCHEDULE:
[paste inputs]
Expect
A requirements table for recipes A, B and C, each making two portions, with ingredient amounts and the supplied planning times.
Check
A needs 200g pasta, 400g tomatoes and one onion; B needs 150g rice, 240g drained chickpeas, one onion and 100g peas; C needs four eggs, 100g peas and four bread slices. All use oil, whose amount is unspecified.
If it differs
If an ingredient or unit changes, send: “Rebuild the requirements directly from all three recipe cards. Keep dry weights, drained weights, counts and unspecified oil distinct. Do not add substitutions.” Compare each row with its card.
02
Fit meals into the schedule
Treat recipe durations as planning inputs, not measured results.
Your starting prompt
Assign the supplied recipes to evenings whose available time is at least the supplied recipe estimate. State servings and every scheduling assumption. Do not add unverified recipes or rely on cooked leftovers unless safe storage/reuse instructions were explicitly supplied.
Expect
Three dinners fitting the supplied evenings, with two portions per meal and planning estimates clearly labeled. The illustration uses A Monday, B Tuesday and C Wednesday.
Check
Wednesday allows 25 minutes, so only the 20-minute C fits there. The 30-minute A and B fit either of the two 35-minute evenings. No cooked leftovers or extra recipe is needed.
If it differs
If a meal overruns its evening or relies on leftovers, send: “Fit only A, B and C to the supplied time limits. Put C on Wednesday and A/B on the longer evenings. Use the given portions and recipe estimates, without cooked leftovers.”
03
Reconcile the shopping list
Subtract usable pantry quantities and then consider package sizes.
Your starting prompt
Sum each ingredient across the plan, subtract the supplied usable pantry quantity, and show required purchase amounts. Translate into whole packs only when pack sizes are supplied. List known remainders separately; keep price and unknown pack sizes unresolved.
Expect
A shopping list after subtracting pantry amounts: one tin providing 240g drained chickpeas, one six-pack of eggs and bread sufficient for four slices.
Check
Add peas as 100g + 100g = 200g and onions as 1 + 1 = 2. Pasta, rice, tomatoes, onions and peas need no extra purchase. Six eggs minus four leaves two; bread remainder and prices stay unknown. Check oil separately because its quantity is unspecified.
If it differs
If the list double-counts ingredients, send: “Show total required, pantry available, amount to buy and known pack remainder for each ingredient. Recalculate peas across both recipes. Keep unspecified oil, bread slice count and prices unresolved.” Check the new sums yourself.
04
Review before buying or cooking
The model cannot certify food safety. Check labels, trusted recipes and current official guidance.
Your starting prompt
Audit the plan for quantity errors, incompatible units, absent ingredients, impossible schedule fits and invented prices. Produce a corrected plan and shopping list. Add a reminder to check package instructions, allergens where relevant and safe cooking/storage guidance; do not give a safety guarantee.
Expect
A corrected plan and shopping list with reminders to inspect usable ingredients and follow suitable trusted recipes, package instructions and current food-safety guidance.
Check
Use the worked-example checks to verify the pea total, purchases and two unused eggs. There is no claim of allergy suitability, safe storage, current prices, savings or measured cooking times.
If it differs
If the answer supplies a safety guarantee, price or unsupported amount, send: “Remove that unsupported claim and keep it unknown. Return the corrected quantities and planning estimates.” Do not cook from an unresolved safety assumption; check the actual food, labels and trusted instructions yourself.
Optional: improve the result
Handle a recipe swap without hidden changes
Record changed quantities so a midweek revision does not create duplicates.
Advanced prompt
Replace only the requested dinner with the supplied new trusted recipe. Recalculate ingredient requirements, purchases and remainders. Return an old-versus-new change list and preserve every unchanged meal. Flag unknown safe storage details rather than inventing them.
Optional: use your own input+
Plan from your own pantry and recipes
Open a new conversation in a text chat AI. Use non-sensitive quantities and recipe text you may share; do not include medical or allergy histories. Choose recipes already suitable for your household. Replace every bracketed section below with your actual portions, usable ingredients, recipe amounts, available evenings and known pack facts together. After checking the ingredient table, send: “Assign only my supplied recipes to my available evenings. Show portions, planning times and any assumption. Flag a meal that cannot fit; do not invent a recipe or rely on cooked leftovers.” “Sum ingredients across that plan, subtract usable pantry amounts in matching units, and show what to buy. Use whole packs only where I supplied their sizes. Separate known remainders from unknown quantities and prices.” “Audit the plan against my recipes, portions and schedule. Recalculate the shopping list and remove invented amounts, prices or safety claims. Return the corrected plan with reminders for my own label and trusted-guidance checks.” If a recipe changes, supply the complete replacement card and ask to recalculate the whole list before using it. These personal checks replace the worked-example checks; the original advanced extension is sample-only unless adapted with your own checked plan and replacement recipe.
Your own-input prompt
Help me plan ordinary household dinners from the information below. First list each supplied recipe’s portions, ingredients, amounts, units and planning time. Keep dry and cooked weights, drained weights, counts and unknowns distinct. Ask about missing quantities instead of guessing. Do not make the schedule yet. We will check this table, then fit the meals, calculate purchases and audit the result. Do not invent recipes, dietary suitability, safe storage life, prices or savings. Do not shop, order, access accounts or contact anyone.
PORTIONS AND USABLE PANTRY
[State the portions needed per meal and each usable ingredient’s amount and unit. Mark unknown amounts explicitly.]
COMPLETE TRUSTED RECIPE CARDS
[Paste each recipe’s ingredients and quantities, stated portions and planning time, with a distinct label. Use recipes you have already checked are suitable.]
EVENINGS AND PACK FACTS
[List the evenings and available cooking time, plus any known purchase-pack sizes. Mark missing sizes or prices unknown. Do not assume cooked leftovers.]
Check your own result
The plan uses your portions, complete recipe amounts and actual evening limits; a recipe or portion change triggers recalculation of the full list.
Ingredients used in multiple meals are summed once, then usable pantry quantities are subtracted in matching units.
Whole-pack purchases and remainders use supplied pack facts; unspecified quantities and prices stay unknown.
You check ingredient condition, suitable recipes, labels and current safe cooking/storage instructions yourself; the text is not a food-safety guarantee.

Tuesday: B, chickpea rice bowl,2 portions,30 min planning estimate.
Wednesday: C, pea omelette,2 portions,20 min planning estimate.
SHOPPING
- One tin supplying 240g drained chickpeas.
- One six-pack of eggs; use 4, leave 2 unused eggs.
- Bread sufficient for 4 slices; buy one suitable loaf, check the pack because total slices are unspecified.
PANTRY RECONCILIATION
Pasta 200g required/200g available; rice 150g/150g; tomatoes 400g/400g; onions 2/2; peas 200g/200g. No additional amount of these is needed for these recipes. Oil quantity is unspecified; check there is enough.
PREPARATION
Before shopping: check that existing ingredients are usable and package dates/storage instructions are acceptable. Each evening: follow the corresponding trusted recipe and safe cooking/storage directions. The plan deliberately does not rely on keeping cooked rice or other cooked leftovers for another day.
UNCERTAINTIES
Prices and bread remainder are unknown. These are supplied recipe-time estimates, not a timed AI test. No nutrition, allergen-safety or savings claim is made.
These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.
Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.
!
A few things to watch for.
Do not rely on AI alone for food allergies, medical diets or safe cooking temperatures.
Freshness, package sizes and cooking time vary; inspect food and follow trusted instructions.
A recipe swap requires recalculating the whole grocery list, not just replacing its title.
