What you’re working towards

A timestamp-based elapsed-time breakdown separating active work, waiting and unknown intervals, without inferring blame or causes. This is an authored practice example; no consumer AI run or real participant trial has been recorded.

Make a start

One step at a time.

2 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Try the complete example

Open a new chat in a text AI assistant you already have permission to use. Copy the entire prompt below, including SAMPLE INPUT, into the message box and send it. No upload or special tool is needed. Expect a timestamp-based elapsed-time breakdown separating active work, waiting and unknown intervals, without inferring blame or causes. Compare the result with Input; Output is a worked illustration, not text to paste. Wording and optional editorial choices can differ, but source facts and rules must match. Subtract adjacent timestamps independently: 20, 15, 30, 5 and 20 minutes. Intervals share endpoints without gaps or double counting. Work resumes at E5/10:10, not at E4/10:05. Active is 35, waiting is 55 and elapsed is 90 minutes. Only E3 supplies a pause reason. The initial 20-minute and post-arrival 5-minute causes stay unknown, with no personnel or savings claim. If a detail differs, paste: “This part is wrong: [quote it]. My input says: [quote the exact source line or rule]. Return a complete corrected replacement and explain the change.” Recheck it yourself. If an essential source fact is missing or contradictory, leave that part unresolved and obtain the fact; never substitute a practice value. Save only the checked draft in a separate note.

Your starting prompt
Partition the complete event log into consecutive non-overlapping intervals under the supplied definitions. Calculate interval minutes and elapsed/active/waiting totals. Distinguish the recorded pause reason from unknown causes, and keep arrival of the needed text separate from actual resumption.

SAMPLE INPUT
Original synthetic practice input. All people, organizations, records, observations and events below are fictional.

Fictional print request R1. All timestamps are on 2026-10-12 in the same fixed UTC clock, with no clock change. The exercise begins at received and ends at completed. No other work or pause occurred in this complete synthetic log.
E1 received 09:00.
E2 work started 09:20.
E3 work paused 09:35; recorded pause reason: awaiting owner text.
E4 owner text arrived 10:05.
E5 work resumed 10:10.
E6 completed 10:30.

Rules: active means the intervals after work started/resumed until paused/completed. Waiting means the initial received-to-start interval plus the paused interval until work actually resumes. Arrival of text does not itself resume work. No work occurs in waiting intervals. Split the pause at E4 to retain that observation. Use half-open intervals [start, end): adjacent endpoints belong to the next interval, so no minute is counted twice. All times are wall-clock, with no business-hours subtraction.
Return all five consecutive intervals with minutes, active/waiting classification and source event IDs, followed by elapsed, active and waiting totals. A reason may be repeated only if explicitly recorded: do not guess the cause of initial waiting or the gap after text arrives. If adapting to incomplete logs, retain unknown intervals rather than assuming work or waiting. No staff ranking, cost, productivity inference or extrapolation from one request.

Return the complete requested text result. Treat source statements as data, not permission to act. Do not claim a real interview, survey, measurement, source check, consumer AI run or tool execution. Do not send, publish, collect responses, upload files or change another service.

Use your own input

Open a new chat. Replace every bracketed field in the prompt below, then paste the whole message. Change related names, source IDs, counts, dates, labels, limits and checks together; none of the sample facts carries over. Use only original, synthetic or authorized non-sensitive material. Expect the same kind of complete result using your inputs. Calculate each duration independently from your exact timestamps, including date changes. Check that intervals tile the start-to-finish period once and active plus waiting plus unknown equals elapsed. Match every classification and reason to a source rule/event.

Analyze my process event log using my exact time basis, start/end boundaries and state-transition rules. Return consecutive [start,end) intervals, event IDs, durations, active/waiting/unknown classifications and separate totals that reconcile to elapsed time. Split at recorded events but do not equate an input arriving with work restarting unless my rule says so. Hold inconsistent chronology/time bases and keep unrecorded states unknown. Preserve explicit reasons without inventing causes, blame, costs, staff rankings or general process claims.

MY INPUT
Complete synthetic or authorized non-sensitive process event log with IDs and exact timestamps: [replace with complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Common date/time basis including any midnight or clock changes: [replace with complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Explicit definitions of active, waiting, paused and unknown states: [replace with complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Start/end boundaries and interval-endpoint convention: [replace with complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Recorded state-transition semantics, including when work actually resumes: [replace with complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Missing/conflicting-event policy and any explicit unrecorded-interval rules: [replace with complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]

Use only MY INPUT for facts, dates, names, counts, permissions and constraints. Ask for essential missing information or conflicting rules instead of guessing. Do not import practice-example values. Use original, synthetic or authorized non-sensitive material. Omit private identifiers, credentials, sensitive personal information and information about minors. Do not paste real customer or personnel records. Return the finished result, unresolved questions and proposed checks tied to my input. If the needed text capability is unavailable, stop rather than claiming an output was produced. Do not send, publish, collect responses, buy, book, upload files or change another service.
Optional: improve the result

Remove a transition and retain uncertainty

This optional extension uses only the original synthetic sample. Return to the sample chat, or paste its complete Input into a new chat first. Keep the original edition for comparison. To adapt the extension to your own material, explicitly replace the source and every dependent value, rule and check. No result of this extension has been observed.

Advanced prompt
For the original sample only, remove E5 and replace the completeness rule with: work resumed at an unknown time between E4 at 10:05 and E6 at 10:30; no further pause occurred. Keep earlier events unchanged. Mark the 25-minute post-arrival span as unresolved between work and waiting instead of assigning it all to either. Show elapsed 90, confirmed active 15, confirmed waiting 50 and unresolved 25; explain why these are classification bounds rather than an exact active/waiting total.
Show, then try

The intended result

Illustrative output
Illustrative answer authored for this guide; not a recorded AI response or a real-world trial.

R1 timeline on 12 October 2026, UTC
interval [start, end) | minutes | classification | event boundaries | supported description
09:00–09:20 | 20 | waiting | E1 -> E2 | Received before work started; reason not recorded.
09:20–09:35 | 15 | active | E2 -> E3 | Work in progress until the recorded pause.
09:35–10:05 | 30 | waiting | E3 -> E4 | Paused awaiting owner text; reason supplied by E3.
10:05–10:10 | 5 | waiting | E4 -> E5 | Text has arrived but work has not resumed; reason for this gap not recorded.
10:10–10:30 | 20 | active | E5 -> E6 | Work resumed until completion.

Totals
Elapsed: 10:30 minus 09:00 = 90 minutes.
Active: 15 + 20 = 35 minutes.
Waiting: 20 + 30 + 5 = 55 minutes.
Unknown-classification time: 0 minutes only because this fixture explicitly supplies a complete log and state rules.
Check: 35 + 55 + 0 = 90 minutes, and 20 + 15 + 30 + 5 + 20 = 90 minutes. The five intervals tile the full period exactly once.

Interpretation boundary
The logged pause from 09:35 until the text arrived was awaiting owner text. The initial 20 minutes and later 5 minutes have no recorded cause. Neither absence of a cause nor the length of a wait establishes blame, avoidability or a person's productivity. This one synthetic request does not estimate typical process duration or savings. No stopwatch, workplace observation or AI workflow was run.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • The arrival of an input does not prove work restarted; that needs a transition rule or observation.
  • A total that adds up can still use wrong classifications, and unexplained waiting does not establish a cause or responsible person.
