Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Open a chat and paste the example

Open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Copy every line under Input in this guide into the message box. Then add the prompt below (the instructions telling the assistant what to do) and send both together. Expect a written response shaped like the example under Output. The wording may differ. If the assistant asks for information already in the input, point to that line; if a necessary fact is missing, keep it unknown rather than guessing.

Your starting prompt
Teach the example turn using only the complete Leaf Line rules above. Show the starting state, test each hand card against the only empty space, make the legal move and show the resulting row and hand. Explain why passing or moving existing cards is not allowed here. Invent no extra rules.
02

Check the specific result

There is only one empty space and only one legal hand card: 4. Check that it leaves the hand, that 1 and 8 remain, and that the row becomes [2, 4, 7]. Compare it with the Input yourself. If the response fails a check, paste the correction prompt below into the same chat. Recheck the corrected version before saving it.

Your starting prompt
Check every proposed action against the supplied Leaf Line rules. Preserve the fixed 2 and 7, remove only the played 4 from the hand, and correct any invented game rule or unnecessary pass.
03

Try it with your own example

Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below, then replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with your own non-sensitive facts and rules. Include the kinds of details listed under Requirements. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of result as this guide, using your values. Compare every name, number and rule with your input. If something differs, point to the exact mismatch and ask for a corrected complete answer. Save only a version you have checked.

Your starting prompt
Use only my complete game rules, starting board, hand and turn instructions below. Test each possible card or move, explain legal choices, make the requested example move and show the resulting state. Do not add rules. If the rules do not resolve a choice, ask rather than guessing.

Use only the new input below. If a fact needed to finish is missing, ask me for it before choosing an answer.

MY INPUT

Optional: improve the result

Practise a no-move turn

Change the state and ask for a decision before revealing the explanation. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.

Advanced prompt
New Leaf Line state: row [3, empty, 5], hand [1, 5, 7]. Ask me whether I should place a card or pass. Wait for my answer before explaining; do not change the rules or reveal the answer in the first reply.
Show, then try

See the shape of the result.

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.

The starting point

Synthetic input
Made-up example for practice.

Complete made-up rules for a non-wagering paper game called Leaf Line. Each player has a row of three spaces and a hand of numbered leaf cards. On a turn, place exactly one card from your hand into one empty space. The row must increase left to right wherever cards are present; gaps are allowed. You cannot move a card already placed. If no card can be legally placed, pass. The example player’s row is [2, empty, 7], and their hand is [1, 4, 8]. There are no other rules affecting this turn. Explain one turn and leave the game state visible.

Copies text only. For image or file tasks, use the source files named in the steps too.

The intended result

Illustrative output
Written example for practice; not a recorded AI response.

Starting row: [2, empty, 7]. Hand: [1, 4, 8].
Only the middle space is empty. Its card must be larger than 2 and smaller than 7.
1 is illegal there because 1 is not larger than 2.
4 is legal because 2 < 4 < 7.
8 is illegal there because 8 is not smaller than 7.
Play: place 4 in the middle space.
Resulting row: [2, 4, 7]. Remaining hand: [1, 8].
Do not move 2 or 7; already-placed cards cannot move. Do not pass, because a legal card is available. This is an illustrative turn, not a played session.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • Real games often have edition-specific exceptions. Paste the actual rule excerpt before applying this pattern elsewhere.
  • A fluent explanation can import rules from a familiar game. Require each instruction to come from your supplied rules.
