Build a workflowGuide

Make a CSV that keeps commas, line breaks and leading zeroes intact

Produce quoted CSV text and a decoded preview without altering any field value.

What you’re working towards

A correctly quoted small CSV and an import-review checklist that preserves exact text fields rather than silently converting them. This is an authored practice example; no consumer AI run has been recorded.

Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Try the complete example

Open a new chat in a text AI assistant you already have permission to use. Paste all of Input from this guide, then the prompt below, in one message. Do not paste Output: that is the illustrative answer for comparison. Expect a written result that will produce quoted CSV text and a decoded preview without altering any field value. Different wording is fine; the source facts and rules must agree.

Your starting prompt
Serialize the two exact records under the supplied CSV rules. Put only the literal header and records between “Literal CSV begins” and “Literal CSV ends,” then give a decoded field-by-field preview and import review checklist. Preserve all six values character for character. Do not replace the embedded line break with a space or literal backslash-n, and do not claim quoting alone preserves spreadsheet types.

Use only the complete synthetic input pasted above. Return the finished written result. Keep missing facts unknown. Do not send, publish, order or change another service.
02

Trace the answer back to the source

Compare the answer with Input yourself. The CSV has three columns and two data records, despite four physical lines. Codes decode to 0012 and 0007, each four characters; label A retains its comma. Note A decodes to Bring "sample"; note B contains exactly one LF between Top and Bottom. Actual import requires text-column handling and comparison in the chosen application; it has not been performed here. If a check fails, paste: “This part is wrong: [quote it]. My source says: [quote the exact line]. Return the complete corrected result and explain the change.” Recheck before saving; if the source itself is incomplete, keep that part unresolved.

Your starting prompt
Audit the result against the source pasted in this chat. Check these specific points:
- The CSV has three columns and two data records, despite four physical lines.
- Codes decode to 0012 and 0007, each four characters; label A retains its comma.
- Note A decodes to Bring "sample"; note B contains exactly one LF between Top and Bottom.
- Actual import requires text-column handling and comparison in the chosen application; it has not been performed here.
Show each mismatch and return a complete corrected replacement. Distinguish your text audit from checks that only a person or the actual application can perform.
03

Use your own input

For your own version, open a new chat. Paste the prompt below after replacing every bracketed field. Replace related IDs, quantities, dates, rules and limits together; none of the practice facts carries over. Expect the same named deliverable using your source. Review it yourself: compare each decoded field with your source character by character, then test a disposable import with explicit text handling if you need an application; stop if zeros, quotes, commas or line breaks change. If a check fails, paste: “This part is wrong: [quote it]. My source says: [quote the exact line]. Return the complete corrected result and explain the change.” Recheck before saving; if the source itself is incomplete, keep that part unresolved.

Your starting prompt
Serialize my exact records into CSV using my field order, delimiter, quote escaping and line-break rules. Preserve all values, including leading zeros, spaces, empty strings, internal quotes and line breaks. Return the literal CSV plus a decoded field-by-field preview and record/column counts. Flag unknown import behavior and formula-like fields for review; do not alter data to force a spreadsheet type.

MY INPUT
Exact records and field order: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Delimiter and quoting convention: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Which fields must remain text: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Line-break policy: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Target import behavior if known: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]

Use only MY INPUT for facts and constraints. Ask for an essential missing fact or conflicting rule before deciding; do not import practice-example names or numbers. Return the complete result plus unresolved questions and a source-based check list. Do not send, publish, buy, schedule or change another service.
Optional: improve the result

Check an empty text value

Distinguish an empty field value from a missing column. This optional extension uses only the synthetic example. Return to the sample chat, or paste its full Input into a new chat first. Do not transfer the changed sample values to your own input.

Advanced prompt
For this synthetic CSV, add record C with code 0008, label Empty note and an empty note string. Return the full CSV under the same quote-all-data-fields convention and its decoded preview. Explain why the final record still has three fields. Do not change the original two records.
Show, then try

See the shape of the result.

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.

The starting point

Synthetic input
Synthetic practice input. All names, products, records and policies below are invented.

Complete fictional records. Field order is code, label, note. Every field is text.
Record A: code is the four-character string 0012; label is Paper, blue; note is Bring "sample". The quote characters around sample are part of the note.
Record B: code is the four-character string 0007; label is Card; note has exactly two lines:
Top
Bottom
The only line break inside a field is between Top and Bottom, represented by one LF character. No leading or trailing spaces are part of any field.
Serialization rules for this exercise: comma delimiter; double-quote every data field; double an internal double quote; retain embedded LF inside its quoted field; use LF between records. Header is code, label, note. Return the literal CSV and a decoded preview. CSV quoting does not set spreadsheet column types. Target importer is unknown; do not open it automatically or change values to force a type.

Copies text only. For image or file tasks, use the source files named in the steps too.

The intended result

Illustrative output
Illustrative answer authored for this guide; not a recorded AI response.

Literal CSV begins
code,label,note
"0012","Paper, blue","Bring ""sample"""
"0007","Card","Top
Bottom"
Literal CSV ends

Decoded preview
Record A, code: 0012 (four characters).
Record A, label: Paper, blue (the comma belongs inside one field).
Record A, note: Bring "sample" (one double quote before and one after sample).
Record B, code: 0007 (four characters).
Record B, label: Card.
Record B, note: Top, then one LF line break, then Bottom. There is no literal backslash-n in the value.

Structure check
There are three columns and two data records, plus the header. The embedded line break makes four physical text lines; physical lines are not record counts. Each doubled internal quote decodes to one quote.

Before an actual import
Use a disposable copy and explicitly configure code, label and note as text where the importer supports this. Compare every decoded field, especially 0012, 0007, the comma, quotes and the single embedded line break. If the importer cannot preserve them, stop and choose a verified text-preserving route; do not remove zeros or insert apostrophes into the source values. No importer behavior or application run is established by this text example.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • Quoted numeric-looking text can still be converted by an importer. Quoting protects field boundaries, not spreadsheet types.
  • Do not prepend an apostrophe or change the string to preserve its appearance without a separately approved transformation; that changes the data.
  • For your own data, review formula-like fields before any spreadsheet import. Text serialization is not a guarantee that an importer will treat them safely.
