What you’re working towards
Pinpoint the missing concept, preserve a learner’s attempted reasoning, and ask for the right level of help. The worked result is a written example for practice; the AI steps have not been tested.

Make a start
One step at a time.
3 steps
Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.
Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.
01
Open a chat and paste the example
Open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Copy every line under Input in this guide into the message box. Then add the prompt below (the instructions telling the assistant what to do) and send both together. Expect a written response shaped like the example under Output. The wording may differ. If the assistant asks for information already in the input, point to that line; if a necessary fact is missing, keep it unknown rather than guessing.
Your starting prompt
Turn the full learner notes above into one precise question for a tutor. Include the supplied rule, my attempted answer, the exact uncertainty and my preferred kind of help. Do not answer the question, create a study course or claim to run a spreadsheet.
02
Check the specific result
The question should retain the learner’s original attempted $D$2 and identify the uncertainty about the dollar sign before the row. It must ask for one example and one unanswered practice item, without providing the solution itself. Compare it with the Input yourself. If the response fails a check, paste the correction prompt below into the same chat. Recheck the corrected version before saving it.
Your starting prompt
Check the drafted learning question against the learner notes. Restore the exact attempted formula and narrow uncertainty if lost. Remove any answer, broad course plan or claim of app execution.
03
Try it with your own example
Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below, then replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with your own non-sensitive facts and rules. Include the kinds of details listed under Requirements. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of result as this guide, using your values. Compare every name, number and rule with your input. If something differs, point to the exact mismatch and ask for a corrected complete answer. Save only a version you have checked.
Your starting prompt
Turn my learner notes below into one precise question for a tutor. Include my supplied rule, attempted answer, exact uncertainty and preferred kind of help. Do not answer the question, invent a course or claim to operate any software.
Use only the new input below. If a fact needed to finish is missing, ask me for it before choosing an answer.
MY INPUT
[PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE]
Optional: improve the result
Ask for a different kind of help
If the first explanation does not help, describe what part remained unclear rather than asking for a longer version of the same answer. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.
Advanced prompt
Rewrite the learning question so it asks for a paper-grid analogy instead of formula terminology. Keep the same attempted formula and uncertainty. Ask the tutor to check my understanding before adding a second concept.
Show, then try

Synthetic input
Made-up example for practice.
Made-up adult learner notes. Topic: spreadsheet references, for an offline paper exercise rather than an app task. Supplied explanation: “A relative cell reference changes when copied by the same number of rows or columns. An absolute reference with a dollar sign before both the column and row stays fixed.” My attempt: “If B2 contains =A2*$D$1 and is copied down to B3, I think the formula becomes =A3*$D$2.” My confusion: I know A2 changes, but I do not understand whether the number after a dollar sign also changes. Desired help: one small explanation with a before/after example, then one practice question. Do not build a spreadsheet.
Copies text only. For image or file tasks, use the source files named in the steps too.
Written example for practice; not a recorded AI response.
A useful question to paste into a tutor chat:
“I am learning relative and absolute spreadsheet references using this rule: a relative reference changes with the copy, and a reference with a dollar sign before both column and row stays fixed. For =A2*$D$1 copied from B2 down to B3, I thought the result was =A3*$D$2. I understand why A2 becomes A3, but I am unsure what the dollar sign before 1 does. Please explain only that part with a before/after example, then give me one similar practice question without its answer.”
What this isolates: the misunderstanding is about the fixed row in $D$1, not about all spreadsheet formulas.
No spreadsheet has been created and no formula has been executed.
These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.
Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.
!
A few things to watch for.
Do not rewrite a learner’s attempt into a correct answer before explaining what they were confused about.
A vague request to explain everything may bury the specific gap. Include the exact stopping point.
