Make a start

One step at a time.

4 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Set up the worked example

Open

Open a chat AI that accepts pasted text and start a new conversation. Keep this guide open so you can compare each reply with the passage. A separate flashcard app is optional.

Add the sample

In step 1, replace [paste source] with all six labeled sentences [S1] through [S6] from ‘The starting point’ (Synthetic input), including their labels. Replace [describe level] with ‘a new volunteer. Use plain language. Do not add policies that are absent from the passage.’ S1 means source sentence 1; the labels help you find evidence. Send the whole prompt. Continue with each later step prompt in this same chat, checking each reply first. Use ‘The intended result’ (Illustrative output) for comparison; you do not need to paste it.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Mark the source boundaries

Use sentence or paragraph labels so the answer key can point to evidence you can find.

Your starting prompt
Use only the passage below. Label its sentences S1, S2 and so on if they are not already labeled. Extract the rules or concepts a learner must remember. Preserve conditions, exceptions and quantities exactly. List questions the passage cannot answer.

PASSAGE:
[paste source]

LEARNER LEVEL:
[describe level]
Expect

A list of rules from S1–S6 and questions the passage cannot answer. The existing sentence labels stay attached to the source.

Check

The item limit is three, each loan lasts seven days and renewal has three limits: once only, nobody else has reserved the item, and the request arrives before it is due. Returned items are checked; damaged items go to staff review.

If it differs

If a rule or limit is missing, quote its labeled sentence and ask for a corrected list. If the AI asks for the passage or learner level, check that both placeholders were replaced. Do not fill gaps with policies from another source.

02

Explain without adding facts

Ask for simpler wording while keeping every important condition. An analogy must not become a new rule.

Your starting prompt
Write a short plain-language explanation of the extracted concepts for this learner. Attach source labels to factual statements. Do not add outside knowledge, unstated causes or extra policies. If a term is not defined by the passage, keep it or mark the definition as unavailable.
Expect

A short explanation in everyday words, with source labels beside factual statements. It should keep the passage’s conditions even when the wording changes.

Check

Find every factual claim in S1–S6. In particular, ‘renew once’ alone is incomplete: the reservation and request-timing conditions must also remain. No late fee or staff-review duration is given.

If it differs

If simpler wording changes a rule, quote the source sentence and ask the AI to rewrite that part with every condition included. Ask it to remove any extra policy and return the corrected explanation.

03

Create questions before answers

Include recall, an application question and a question where the correct response is that information is missing.

Your starting prompt
Create a short retrieval quiz covering every important rule. Include direct recall, one application scenario and one question that tests recognizing missing information. Put the answer key after all questions so I can hide it. Include a source label and brief reason for each supported answer. Mark scenarios as hypothetical.
Expect

Questions first, followed by a separate answer key. There should be recall questions, a clearly made-up application situation and a question whose answer is that information is missing. The exact wording and question count may differ from the illustration.

Check

The quiz covers every source rule. Each supported answer points to the right sentence label and explains why. A question about an unstated late fee must be answered as missing information, not with an invented amount.

If it differs

If a rule is untested, ask for a question that tests it. If an answer has no support, ask the AI to remove it or make the missing-information answer explicit. Ask it to return questions together, with the key in a separate section afterward.

04

Test the pack against the passage

Check the key yourself, then answer from memory before looking at it.

Your starting prompt
Audit this study pack against the original passage. For each answer, identify its evidence or mark it unsupported. Check that all conditions and quantities were preserved. Remove questions that require outside knowledge unless their intended answer is explicitly "not stated". Return the corrected pack.
Expect

A corrected study pack that keeps the questions separate from the answer key and identifies source support for each factual answer.

Check

Read each answer against its cited sentence yourself. Check all renewal conditions again. Then cover or scroll past the key and try answering from memory; compare your answers afterward.

If it differs

If an answer still conflicts with the passage, give its question number and the exact source sentence, then ask for a corrected pack. Keep any genuinely unanswered question labeled ‘not stated’. A fluent answer is not evidence that the source supports it.

Optional: improve the result

Build a second quiz around your mistakes

Reuse the same source and your actual answers to focus practice. Keep a human check on grading.

Advanced prompt
Compare my answers with the source-grounded key. Mark each correct, partly correct or incorrect and quote the missing rule when relevant. Create one new question for each missed concept without adding outside facts. Keep the new answers in a separate section. Do not claim mastery from one correct response.

Make a pack from your own passage

Start a new chat with a non-sensitive passage you have permission to use. Fill the placeholders below. After checking the extracted rules, send these messages one at a time in that chat, checking each reply:
“Explain the extracted concepts for my learner in plain language, with source labels. Preserve every condition and quantity. Do not add facts or definitions absent from my passage.”
“Write a short quiz covering every important rule. Include recall, a made-up application situation and a question about missing information. Put the answer key after all questions, with source labels and reasons.”
“Audit the pack against my passage. Correct unsupported answers and lost conditions. Keep missing information marked not stated. Return the corrected pack with questions and key separate.”
Verify the key yourself before studying. The original advanced extension is sample-only unless adapted with your own source, checked key and actual answers.

Your own-input prompt
Help me build a study pack using only my passage. First label its sentences S1, S2 and so on unless clear labels already exist. Extract the concepts or rules the learner needs, preserving all quantities, conditions and exceptions. List important questions the passage cannot answer. Do not create the full quiz yet. We will check this extraction before making an explanation, questions and a separate evidence-based answer key, then audit the finished pack. Mark invented practice situations as hypothetical, meaning made up for practice. Return written text only; do not publish, share or update another app.

LEARNER AND WORDING NEEDS
[Describe the learner’s level and list any terms that must stay exact. Say none if there are no special wording needs.]

Check your own result

  • Every factual explanation and supported answer can be traced to your supplied passage.
  • Your passage’s quantities, exceptions and conditions remain intact.
  • The quiz covers the important source material and clearly separates questions from answers.
  • Missing information stays missing; outside facts are not silently added to the answer key.
Show, then try

See the shape of the result.

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.

The starting point

Synthetic input
Synthetic source passage: a fictional lending desk.
[S1] Borrowers may take up to three items at a time.
[S2] Each loan lasts seven days.
[S3] An item may be renewed once if nobody else has reserved it.
[S4] Renewals must be requested before the item is due.
[S5] A returned item is checked before it becomes available to another borrower.
[S6] A damaged item is set aside for staff review.
Learner: a new volunteer. Use plain language. Do not add policies that are absent from the passage.

The intended result

Illustrative output
QUICK EXPLANATION
A borrower can have up to three items, each for seven days [S1–S2]. They can renew an item once, but only if nobody has reserved it and they ask before it is due [S3–S4]. Staff check returned items before lending them again; damaged items wait for staff review [S5–S6].

RETRIEVAL QUESTIONS
1. How many items may a borrower have at once?
2. How long does each loan last?
3. What three limits apply to a renewal?
4. What happens before a returned item becomes available again?
5. Where does a damaged item go?
6. The passage gives no late-fee amount. Can you tell a borrower what they would pay?

ANSWER KEY
1. Up to three items [S1].
2. Seven days [S2].
3. Only one renewal; nobody else has reserved the item; request it before it is due [S3–S4].
4. It is checked [S5].
5. It is set aside for staff review [S6].
6. No. The passage does not state whether a late fee exists or what it would be.

APPLICATION CHECK
A borrower asks for a second renewal before the due date, and nobody has reserved the item. Is renewal allowed under this passage?
Answer: No. Only one renewal is allowed [S3].

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • Accepting a fluent explanation that quietly removes an exception.
  • Reading the answer key repeatedly instead of trying to retrieve the answer first.
