What you’re working towards
Match stated reading preferences to supplied book descriptions without inventing reviews or plots. The worked result is a written example for practice; the AI steps have not been tested.
Your choice also saves this guide’s current worked-example checkmarks. Only this browser; no account or sync. View saved guides

Make a start
One step at a time.
3 steps
Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.
Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.
01
Open a chat and paste the example
Open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Copy every line under Input in this guide into the message box. Then add the prompt below (the instructions telling the assistant what to do) and send both together. Expect a written response shaped like the example under Output. The wording may differ. If the assistant asks for information already in the input, point to that line; if a necessary fact is missing, keep it unknown rather than guessing.
Your starting prompt
Compare the five fictional books against the reader’s exact criteria. Distinguish hard exclusions from the softer setting preference. Pick the strongest match, give one backup if it meets the hard limits, and give a source-based reason for each excluded option. Invent no plot, review or availability claim.
02
Check the specific result
Verify A meets all five criteria. E is an acceptable backup because the city setting is a preference, while B, C and D each violate a hard condition. Under 250 excludes 250 itself if a future option has that length. Compare it with the Input yourself. If the response fails a check, paste the correction prompt below into the same chat. Recheck the corrected version before saving it.
Your starting prompt
Check your recommendation against the exact descriptions and separate hard constraints from the setting preference. Correct any invented plot or reason, and retain exclusions for B, C and D.
03
Try it with your own example
Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below, then replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with your own non-sensitive facts and rules. Include the kinds of details listed under Requirements. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of result as this guide, using your values. Compare every name, number and rule with your input. If something differs, point to the exact mismatch and ask for a corrected complete answer. Save only a version you have checked.
Your starting prompt
Compare my supplied book descriptions against my reading criteria below. Separate hard exclusions from softer preferences. Choose the strongest eligible match and a backup only if it meets every hard limit. Give source-based reasons for exclusions. Do not invent plots, reviews or availability.
Use only the new input below. If a fact needed to finish is missing, ask me for it before choosing an answer.

Optional: improve the result
Find the preference that changes the choice
Explore how your own priorities affect the shortlist without asking the assistant to invent book information. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.
Advanced prompt
Keep the same five descriptions. Show how the choice changes if I now require a city setting and still enforce every original hard limit. Name the winning book and the single preference change that caused the switch.
Show, then try

01 / The starting point
Synthetic input
Made-up example for practice.
Made-up books and a fictional adult reader. Reader wants a standalone novel under 250 pages, with an optimistic tone and no horror; for tonight, prefers a setting outside a big city. Supplied descriptions: A “The Small Harbor”, 220 pages, standalone, hopeful, set in a coastal village, no horror; B “Night Towers”, 180 pages, standalone horror, set in a city; C “The Long Road Home”, 340 pages, standalone and hopeful, rural setting; D “Garden Windows”, 200 pages, first volume of an unfinished series, gently comic, suburban setting; E “A Quiet Square”, 230 pages, standalone, hopeful, city setting, no horror. These are invented books, not recommendations of real titles. Do not infer unseen plots, quality or availability.
Copies text only. For image or file tasks, use the source files named in the steps too.
Written example for practice; not a recorded AI response.
Best match for tonight: A, The Small Harbor.
It meets every stated criterion: standalone, 220 pages, hopeful, no horror, and a coastal-village setting.
Backup: E, A Quiet Square. It meets the hard limits, but its city setting is less aligned with tonight’s preference.
Excluded from this shortlist
B: horror conflicts with a hard exclusion.
C: 340 pages exceeds the under-250-page limit.
D: it is the first volume of an unfinished series rather than a standalone.
This choice follows only the fictional descriptions; it says nothing about writing quality or where a book can be obtained.
These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.
Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.
Recommendations become unreliable when an assistant fills in a book from a familiar-sounding title. Paste the exact description you want used.
State whether a preference is flexible; otherwise the assistant may treat it as a hard limit.
