What you’re working towards

Track times, places and objects so a fictional scene does not contradict itself. The worked result was written for this guide; it is not a recording of an AI run.

Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Open a text assistant and try the example

For a concrete starter route, open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Sign in if that service requires it for your access. You can also use another text assistant you already have. Copy the entire prompt below (the instructions to paste), including the sample input, into its message box and send it. No upload or image generation is needed. Expect a source-ID error list and six corrected sentences. The wording may differ from the example; the constraints should not. If it only explains the task, ask it to produce the finished result using the supplied input.

Your starting prompt
Use the fixed facts as authority. List each contradiction with its source sentence ID, the fixed fact it conflicts with, and the smallest repair. Then return the six corrected sentences with their IDs. Do not rewrite style or invent unseen travel.

Use this complete made-up practice input:
Fixed facts: The scene begins at 18:00 and ends at 18:20. Jori never leaves the greenhouse. The only key is brass. Jori puts that key in the blue bowl at 18:05; it remains there until she picks it up at 18:20. The greenhouse has one door, facing east.
Draft:
S1. At 18:00, Jori entered the greenhouse through its east-facing door.
S2. At 18:05, she placed the brass key in the blue bowl.
S3. At 18:10, she looked out from the garden path.
S4. At 18:12, she turned the key over in her hand.
S5. At 18:20, she picked the silver key out of the blue bowl.
S6. At 18:25, still inside, she looked toward the west-facing door.
Goal: Repair only conflicts with the fixed facts.

Return the finished result. Keep it fictional and do not add claims about real people, products or events.
02

Check, correct and save

Read the response beside the original input. Check all six sentence IDs remain in the corrected draft. Verify location, key metal, key custody, door direction and final time against the fixed facts. Confirm S1 and S2 stay unchanged and no unseen trip is invented. If a check fails, paste the correction prompt below in the same conversation. Check the revised result yourself, then copy the version you want into your own notes or document.

Your starting prompt
Check your previous result against this original input:

Check these requirements one by one:
- Check all six sentence IDs remain in the corrected draft.
- Verify location, key metal, key custody, door direction and final time against the fixed facts.
- Confirm S1 and S2 stay unchanged and no unseen trip is invented.
Quote each problem, explain the smallest repair, and return a complete corrected version. If there is no problem, say which checks you applied. Do not claim that your own review proves quality or audience response.

Optional: use your own material

Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below and replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with fixed fictional facts and source sentences with unique labels. Use material you own or may use and leave out private details. The output limits written in this prompt stay in force; change a limit here too if you want a different one. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of written result with your new material. Check it against this new input and these limits, not the sample’s names or numbers. If it differs, describe the exact mismatch and ask for a complete correction before saving.

Your starting prompt
Use my fixed facts below as the authority. For each contradiction, list its source sentence label, conflicting fixed fact and smallest repair. Return every supplied sentence with its original label, changing only what needs repair. Do not rewrite style or invent unseen events to explain a contradiction.

If an essential detail is missing or two requirements conflict, ask me before filling the gap.

Optional: improve the result

Build a reusable continuity ledger

Separate stable facts from events when a draft gets longer. Keep the first version so you can compare the change. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.

Advanced prompt
Create a plain-text ledger with sections for stable facts, timed events, object custody and unresolved questions. Populate it only from the fixed facts and corrected draft. Then describe exactly what information a new scene must supply to check against it.
Use the original input and result in this conversation. If either is missing, ask me to paste it before continuing.
Show, then try

See the shape of the result.

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.

The starting point

Synthetic input
Made-up example for practice. All people, places and events are invented.

Fixed facts: The scene begins at 18:00 and ends at 18:20. Jori never leaves the greenhouse. The only key is brass. Jori puts that key in the blue bowl at 18:05; it remains there until she picks it up at 18:20. The greenhouse has one door, facing east.
Draft:

The intended result

Illustrative output
Worked example written for this guide; it is not a recording of an AI run.

Contradictions and minimal repairs:
- S3: “from the garden path” conflicts with Jori remaining inside. Replace it with “through the greenhouse window.”
- S4: The key cannot be in her hand at 18:12 because it remains in the bowl. Replace the action with looking at the key in the bowl.
- S5: “silver” conflicts with the brass key. Change the metal to brass.
- S6: 18:25 exceeds the scene's end, and west-facing conflicts with the east-facing door. Change the time to 18:20 and the direction to east-facing.

Corrected draft:
S1. At 18:00, Jori entered the greenhouse through its east-facing door.
S2. At 18:05, she placed the brass key in the blue bowl.
S3. At 18:10, she looked out through the greenhouse window.
S4. At 18:12, she looked at the key in the blue bowl.
S5. At 18:20, she picked the brass key out of the blue bowl.
S6. At 18:20, still inside, she looked toward the east-facing door.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • When two draft passages disagree, the assistant may choose one arbitrarily. Supply authoritative facts or leave the conflict for the author.
  • Continuity editing can become unnecessary style rewriting. Ask for minimal factual repairs first.
